Infectious Diseases Institute Profile:
The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is a Ugandan not-for-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen health systems in Africa, with strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development. IDI has six operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research, Laboratory services (including the CAP-certified IDI Core Lab & Translational Lab), Global Health Security and Health System Strengthening.
Job Summary:
Lower Respiratory Illnesses are a leading cause of mortality globally and the treatment given is usually empirical based on epidemiological data and known or perceived antimicrobial susceptibility patterns:
Aim 1: Research on the epidemiology and predictors of clinical outcomes in community acquired pneumonia in a high HIV burden setting.
Aim 2: Capacity Building: Research supervision for Masters and PhD on research related to Community Acquired Pneumonia.
Overall this grant will contribute to a better understanding of common causes of lower respiratory illnesses and appropriate locally tailored approaches to treatment. It will also build capacity to mentor junior researchers in respiratory illnesses in sub-Saharan Africa.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Key deliverables at the end of the engagement:
- Submission of the Master thesis
- Submission of a manuscript
This will cover:
- A monthly stipend (for one year) during the period of data collection and report writing
Successful candidates;
- Will conduct research activities aligned with the parent study.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Highly motivated individuals capable of self-directed study and planning a career in a Respiratory medicine or Infectious disease specialty are invited to apply, if they;
- Possess a medical degree (MBChB or equivalent) and clinical or research experience; and have enrolled for a Master’s degree.
- Have a demonstrable interest in research, writing, and publication
- In addition, wish to develop particular expertise in Respiratory medicine or Infectious disease specialty through the following areas: epidemiology of infectious diseases, clinical trials methodology, and prevention of infection, hospital infection control, pathogenesis research, and laboratory expertise in a selected area, vaccine studies, antimicrobial pharmacology, cost-effective strategies for resource-limited settings, and other topics in Respiratory and Infectious Diseases.
Eligibility
Applicants must be enrolled in one of the following Clinical Masters’ programs at Makerere University:
- Masters in Medicine at the School of Medicine or School of Biomedical Sciences (who are in their 1st or 2nd year) are eligible to participate in this program.
- Student affiliated with this program also have an opportunity to participate in various short structured courses for training in clinical research and skills building sessions that are on-going at IDI. We will consider a highly motivated individual, able to conduct research with minimal supervision and with excellent written and oral communication skills.
