Job Summary:
The position will be responsible for providing nursing care to research participants in the COVAC Uganda trial and carrying out other duties that will enable successful implementation of the research project in a timely manner following Good Clinical Practice guidelines.
The COVAC Uganda Study is a clinical trial that will be conducted at MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit at its site in Masaka. It is sponsored by The Imperial College London and funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).
Full title of the trial is: A clinical trial to assess the safety and immunogenicity of LNP-nCOV saRNA-02, a self-amplifying ribonucleic acid (saRNA) vaccine encoding the S glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, in SARS-CoV-2 seronegative and seropositive Uganda population
Roles and Responsibilities:
- The Clinical Research Nurse, under the guidance and supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) or designee, ensures the integrity and quality of the clinical trials is maintained, and that the trial is conducted in accordance with local regulations and MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit policies and procedures;
- Is primarily responsible for the accurate completion of visit procedures and collection of information from study participants according to protocols, and for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of research participants;
- In addition, the clinical trial nurse also may be delegated to support the role of study coordination;
- Ensure study participants adhere to the treatment prescribed and follow the scheduled appointment;
- Participate in design of study documents such as SOPs, writing abstracts and manuscripts, etc;
- Ensures compliance with the study protocol by providing thorough review and documentation at each subject study visit;
- Participates in recruitment and selection of study participants by interviewing and documenting medical history to determine compliance with eligibility requirements;
- Performs medical tests, including, but not limited to, vital signs, imaging studies, and electrocardiograms;
- Administers investigational medications and performs patient assessments during clinic visits to determine presence of side effects; notifies Principle Investigator or designee of findings/issues;
- Provides patient education and medical information to study patients to ensure understanding of proper medication dosage, administration, and disease treatment;
- Documents medical data in patient chart to capture protocol requirements;
- Participates with the PI and study team to identify and prioritize the development of systems and infrastructure to maintain research quality and compliance;
- Occasional travel to attend sponsor study training meetings as required; and,
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Diploma in nursing field from a recognised institution;
- Must be registered with the Uganda Nurses and Midwifery council;
- Possession of formal training in public health, research methods, ICH-GCP is desired;
- At least two years’ experience in clinical setting;
- Experience in clinical trial setting;
- Experience in provision of nursing care to COVID patients/survivors, and SARS-CoV-2 sample collection;
- Comprehensive and current understanding of common pharmaceutical products;
- Understanding of ICH/GCP guidelines for human research; and,
- Computer competency including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel Good computer skills.
