Legal Fellow at Wikimedia Foundation

Description: If you’re a current law student or recent law school graduate passionate about free knowledge and open-source issues, applying to our legal fellowship program can provide an immersive in-house experience with specific education and training in the areas of Internet law and free knowledge organizations. Fellows will work on challenging legal projects under the supervision of experienced attorneys, gaining practical insights into practicing law in a web-based organization.
Responsibilities:
- Undertake challenging legal projects related to copyright, freedom of speech, mobile development, and corporate compliance.
- Conduct legal research, draft agreements and policies, and develop internal and external legal frameworks.
- Collaborate closely with supervising attorneys, attend meetings, and contribute to team projects.
- Adapt legal concepts for communication to diverse audiences and communities.
Requirements:
- Passion for Wikimedia Foundation’s free knowledge mission and open-source issues.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multitasking environment with a sense of humor.
- Intellectual curiosity and problem-solving skills, with a preference for research experience.
- Experience or interest in working with large online communities, especially wikis or Wikimedia projects.
- Excellent writing skills and coursework in relevant legal areas such as internet law, freedom of speech, and intellectual property.
- Multilingual proficiency, particularly in German, French, or Italian, is a plus.
