Job Title: Legal Assistant
Organization: African Centre for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (ACTV)
Duty Station: Kampala and Kaabong, Uganda
Reports to: Project Coordinator
About Us: The African Centre for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (ACTV) is a Non-Governmental organization in Uganda, operating since 1993. Our mandate includes advocating against torture and providing physical and psychological treatment, rehabilitation, social support, and legal services to survivors of torture.
Job Summary: The Legal Assistant will provide effective legal advice and services to torture survivors in accordance with ACTV’s legal standard operating procedures.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide legal services for torture survivors.
- Interview clients and accurately record their complaints in preparation for litigation.
- Prepare torture survivors for court appearances.
- Assist in coordinating and conducting visits to places of detention to offer legal advice.
- Support awareness/sensitization workshops for communities and security officers on human rights and torture.
- Screen, provide legal advice, make referrals, and conduct client follow-ups.
- Properly document and file all client information and legal documents for future reference.
- Assist in conducting client legal case investigations and follow-ups.
- Prepare and produce periodic reports for the unit as per agreed timelines.
- Conduct legal research in preparation for court.
- Draft contracts, agreements, and MOUs between ACTV and organizations/partners.
- Carry out any other work-related duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Key Performance Indicators:
- Appropriate actions taken on legal matters in line with the SOPs/Job responsibilities.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Law.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with a law firm or similar experience in an NGO.
- Languages: Fluency in English, proficiency in Ngakarimojong language.
Competencies:
- Demonstrable knowledge of MS Office and web-based applications.
- Experience in public speaking is an asset.
- Ability to prioritize and adapt to changing situations based on need.
- Ability to multitask.
- Dedication to working for and with vulnerable people.
- Demonstrated documentation skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Risk management skills.
- Analytical skills.
