UNHCR Uganda Profile:
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. UNHCR’s mandate under the Statute of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is to lead and co-ordinate action for international protection to refugees; seek permanent solutions for the problems of refugees and safeguard refugee rights and well-being. UNHCR has an additional mandate concerning issues of statelessness, as it is given a designated role under Article 11 of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Assist in monitoring of detention facilities jointly with legal patterns to ascertain minimum human rights standards and UNHCR¿s detention monitoring guidelines are adhered to.
- Assist in providing support to the Legal Assistance staff in monitoring of the legal information sessions across the Five Zones in Bidibidi settlement, attending monthly District Chain Link (DCC) Meetings with the JLOS partners at DCC, Mobile Courts and any other legal activities.
- Assist in boarder monitoring, facilitating trainings organized by partners either International Rescue Committee (IRC), Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and UNHCR.
- Assist in monitoring and follow-up of cases in protection houses.
- Assist in monitoring and providing guidance to activities for women empowerment undertaken by the protection partners.
- Assist in conducting file reviews and gather all existing information on GBV survivors, their families, and perpetrator and propose assistance for the survivors and families.
- Assist in conducting assessments with GBV survivors and their families according to UNHCR¿s GBV Prevention and Response Guidelines and Action against Gender-Based Violence.
- Assist in Referring survivors of GBV promptly to safe placements, psychosocial support, livelihoods opportunities, and other lifesaving / urgent interventions to ensure their survival and wellbeing.
- Assist in organizing meetings and case conferences for cases that require multi-sectoral responses to find solutions.
Attend zonal, settlement, and national Sector Working group meetings as necessary. - Draft concept notes and project proposals for the capacity building of female leaders in the settlement with the support of supervisor.
- Assist in monitoring project implementation to ensure project deliverables are met.
- Draft monthly reports and relevant project documentation with the support of supervisor.
- Perform any other duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
Eligible Applicants
- In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
- Any applicant whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.
Required
- Master¿s degree in social science, preferably in international law, criminology, gender studies or other relevant fields of study
Desired
- Experience working with colleagues and partners with international and diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrated understanding of critical issues around protection and knowledge of data collection and analysis and conducting assessments
- Demonstrated knowledge in gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls and apply, promote and integrate gender analysis into programming.
- Demonstrated knowledge of protection issues related to imprisonment
- Project design and implementation experience
- Proven research skills
