Action Against Hunger is a global humanitarian organization that takes decisive action against the causes and effects of hunger. We save the lives of malnourished children. With more than 6,500 staff in over 45 countries, our programs reached 14.9 million people in 2015.
About the Programme Action Against Hunger began its work in Uganda since 1980 in response to famine conditions in the Karamoja Region where we saved the lives of undernourished children while building the capacities of the community. We have been continuously operating in Uganda for the last 22 years delivering interventions in nutrition, WASH and Food Security and Livelihoods. For the last three years and with the same aim of saving lives and empowering the community, we have been working in the Northern part of Uganda to save lives of refugees and host communities while providing long term solutions to hunger. We are currently operating in and around Kyangwali, Yumbe, Adjumani and Kiryandongo refugee settlements. Some of the major donors we have worked with include but not omitted to, ECHO, DFID, SIDA, WFP, UNCICEF, EUTF and French Embassy.
Job Profile
The Wash Officer reports to the Deputy Program Manager and provides support in the implementation of WASH related activities under UBS foundation in schools, communities and health facilities. He/She works closely with the Nutrition officers to implement IMAM at both health facility and community levels. He s/he is responsible for identification and verification of program beneficiaries, facilitation of household action planning, program monitoring, deliver trainings to beneficiaries, monitor beneficiary knowledge and skills uptake and replication and report implementation challenges, successes, lessons learned, implement agreed actions with beneficiaries and ensure uptake and use of knowledge and skills by the beneficiaries and foster an environment that supports values of women and men, and equal access to information.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Design and manage assessments and studies in order to identify WASH needs in target communities.
- Working with the WASH Officer – Hygiene Promotion, manage assessments/evaluations in order to identify key strengths, limitations of community structures managing WASH facilities In cooperation with other WASH staff, design and plan activities on construction/rehabilitation and repair of water supply and sanitation facilities, and ensure timely implementation.
- Undertake technical designs, cost estimation of all WASH facilities planned for implementation at the targeted communities.
- Support preparation and review all contracts to be awarded to vendors of goods and services related to water supply and sanitation component of the project
- Supervise construction, repair and rehabilitation of water supplies systems and sanitation facilities in strict adherence to the Kenya government regulations, WHO and the SPHERE standard.
- Support implementation of hygiene promotion activities appropriate to the context in close collaboration with the WASH Officer – Hygiene Promotion to ensure that technical and social aspects of water and sanitation programming are integrated
- Support assessments and assist in proposal development for additional resources for water supply, sanitation and hygiene interventions
- Any other relevant responsibility as may be assigned by the Supervisor or other relating supervisors.
Minimum Qualifications
• Degree in Environmental health science, Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, Degree in public health or any related field.
• Practical experience in successful WASH related projects in a busy multi-sectoral setting/programming –
• Knowledge in FSL/Nutrition is added advantage
• Previous work in a refugee setting is desirable.
• Strong communication skills (written and oral) in English
• Extremely flexible with the ability to cope with stressful situations
• Excellent reporting skills with good oral and written communication skills
• Knowledge of the local language is an added advantage
• Ability and willingness to ride a motor cycle
