Overview
Jhpiego seeks a Technical Director to lead technical and project activities for the upcoming USAID-funded Urban Health Activity in Uganda. This project focuses on strengthening urban health systems and improving health outcomes in the Kampala metropolitan area, including Kampala, Mukono, and Wakiso districts.
The position operates under the leadership of the Chief of Party and Jhpiego’s senior management team and ensures the technical and methodological soundness of project activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and technical oversight for project activities.
- Establish and implement systems to ensure the technical quality of the project.
- Develop evidence-based training materials, standards, and curricula.
- Provide technical guidance for linking health facilities, communities, and organizations.
- Engage stakeholders to map and utilize existing resources (e.g., private clinics, NGOs, CBOs).
- Introduce and monitor performance and quality improvement measures.
- Mentor and build capacity at individual and organizational levels in health service areas, including MNCH, FP/RH, nutrition, and WASH/IPC.
- Support site assessments, referral systems, and pre-service and in-service education.
- Coordinate advocacy and policy support across project sites.
- Identify and implement strategies to address service delivery gaps in urban health settings.
- Collaborate with Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) teams to track project results.
- Document successes, challenges, and lessons learned.
- Author abstracts, presentations, and articles for conferences and journals.
- Supervise technical staff and subgrantees.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: Medical degree (doctor or nursing) with a Master of Public Health preferred.
- Experience:
- At least 10 years of technical assistance experience in urban health projects.
- Experience implementing $5-10 million/year donor-funded projects, preferably in Uganda.
- Proven experience training clinical and community healthcare workers.
- Capacity building at individual and organizational levels.
- Skills:
- Expertise in service delivery, training, pre-service education, and quality improvement.
- Familiarity with Uganda’s healthcare system, including public and private sectors.
- Understanding USAID administrative, management, and reporting procedures.
- Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with private sector healthcare providers.
- Familiarity with sustainable health systems in urban settings.
- Demonstrated expertise in adapting research findings to project contexts.
