Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the FAO Representative in Uganda and direct supervision of the Team Leader- Forestry, the Programme Analyst will oversee project activities in the assigned region or cluster. The role involves working closely with and reporting to programme specialists on wood harvesting, SME finance and business development services, and forestry technical advisors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Beneficiary Mobilization: Engage project beneficiaries, ensuring inclusive participation and benefit for men and women.
  • Timber Producer Group Formation: Assist specialists in mobilizing timber producers at the cluster level to form collective groups.
  • Forest Inventory Participation: Conduct forest inventories for selected plantations and develop yield regulation plans.
  • Operational Harvesting Plans (OHPs): Train forest owners to create OHPs for guided harvesting operations.
  • Harvest Monitoring: Periodically check harvesting compartments for safety compliance, sawmill wood quality, and adherence to Yield Regulation Plans.
  • Certification Implementation: Manage certification schemes for contractors, wood processors, and traders.
  • Timber Grading: Support grading operations to meet national and regional timber standards.
  • Training: Organize hands-on training in wood harvesting, seasoning, and processing.
  • Business Development Services: Facilitate activities that improve access to finance for small and medium forestry enterprises.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in forestry, wood science and technology, wood products technology, agroforestry, or a related field.
  • Experience: Five years of experience in a commercial forestry environment in Uganda.
  • Language: Proficient in English (Level C).
  • Nationality: Ugandan citizen.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Experience mobilizing and supporting project beneficiaries.
  • Knowledge of forest inventory and certification/audit processes.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Prior experience with an international organization is an advantage.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Selection Criteria: Familiarity with wood resource assessment, harvesting, sawmilling, and wood products manufacturing is a significant asset.
