Job Overview
Under the supervision of the Field Manager, the Medical Officer shall be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of clinical services in IRC-Kiryandongo settlement health facilities. This includes maternal and child health, nutrition, expanded program on immunization, and ensuring the functionality of both laboratory and pharmaceutical services.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct daily ward rounds for patients in the in-patient wards and attend to all medical and surgical emergencies while on duty.
- Provide daily comprehensive evaluation and delivery of health services to clients/patients according to Ministry of Health guidelines, protocols, and the WHO public health strategy.
- Promptly evaluate patients for referral and follow up to ensure services are accessed at referral points.
- Coordinate clinical audits, patient chart reviews, and mortality audits as part of continuous learning and improvement of health services delivery.
- Monitor the availability of medicines and medical supplies at settlement facilities and promptly alert the Field Manager on shortfalls and needs for re-stocking.
- Ensure adequate daily health team coverage of the clinics and rational prescription and use of medicines and supplies.
- Coordinate integrated service delivery at the settlement health facilities, including maternal child health, non-communicable diseases, nutrition, HIV care, and reproductive health services.
- Ensure consistent and timely collection, utilization, and reporting of facility-based health data.
- Identify training needs and provide just-in-time training and mentorship for multidisciplinary health care teams.
- Actively participate in education talks to inform the community to adopt health-promoting behaviors.
- Represent the IRC in meetings/workshops to maintain effective and cordial relationships with District Health authorities, other district officials, community leaders, and other NGOs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from a reputable medical training school.
- At least two years’ experience in humanitarian programming.
- Must be registered with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC) with a valid practicing license.
- Previous experience working in a settlement setting is an added advantage.
- Understanding of human rights and issues relating to gender equality.
- Strong written and verbal communication ability in English.
- Ability to gain trust and build relationships with new communities.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Experience in regular report writing.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently.
- Flexible and able to work in a dynamic and diverse environment.
