Project Background:

GrowAfrica is seeking six (6) interns to work on Upstream and Advisory projects that aim to reduce the operational risks of IFC investment projects by strengthening supply chains, addressing food security, collaborating with the World Bank, building farmer capacities, improving product traceability, and enhancing food safety. Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to the agriculture industry’s development and gain valuable field experience. Interns will work under the supervision of the Project Leader and direct supervision of the Project Coordinator.

Objectives of the Internship:

The IFC MAS GrowAfrica Intern Program is designed to bridge academic knowledge and professional practice, facilitating a smooth career transition for qualified graduate students. Interns will gain hands-on experience in agribusiness development in Africa, with the following expectations:

  • Project Involvement: Contribute meaningfully to IFC’s goals and gain knowledge in agricultural supply chain dynamics.

Scope of the Assignments:

Interns are expected to:

  • Assist in coordinating/facilitating farmer training on Good Agricultural Practices.
  • Coordinate training and coaching for Licensed Buying Agents on record-keeping and traceability.
  • Support data collection and maintain a project document database.
  • Monitor project indicators and update a risk register.
  • Help establish demonstration sites for participatory learning.
  • Supervise and guide farmers in producing quality declared seeds.
  • Prepare materials and content for major activities and media outreach.
  • Share best practices and lessons learned.
  • Promote sustainable agro-ecological practices.
  • Develop a heatmap for priority crops in Africa and contribute to stakeholder engagements.
  • Support synergies with the World Bank in designing and implementing operations.
  • Assist in coordinating project meetings and field trips.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Coordinator/Project Leader.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Prefer master’s or PhD with at least two years of work experience.
  • Studying agriculture with a focus on crop science, agricultural economy, agronomy, soil management, social science, economy, or related fields.
  • Ability to use initiative, prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Effective communication skills in multicultural, multilingual environments.
  • Knowledge of African agribusiness challenges and opportunities.
  • Clear and systematic thinking with good judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and social media.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Results-oriented and a team player with good interpersonal skills.

Remuneration:

  • Working hours: Up to 40 hours per week, maximum 160 hours per month.
  • Internship stipend: Negotiated based on experience and qualifications.

Expected Start Date: June 1 – July 31, 2024 (Minimum of two months, not exceeding six months)

Reporting: The intern will report to the Project Leader (PL) and be directly supervised by the Project Coordinator.
