Duty Station: Kampala, Uganda

Reports to: Program Manager

About Us: The African Centre for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (ACTV) is a Non-Governmental organization in Uganda, operating since 1993. Our mandate includes advocacy against torture and provision of physical and psychological treatment and rehabilitation, social support, and legal services to survivors of torture.

Job Summary: The Social Worker will provide appropriate services and empowerment to torture survivors by engaging individuals and structures to address life challenges and enhance well-being.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct interviews and provide psychological support to torture survivors as individuals, families, and groups through counseling and home visits.
  2. Develop care plans and counseling services for survivors of torture.
  3. Conduct client reviews and follow-ups in their communities and families to assess and monitor progress.
  4. Provide socioeconomic support to clients in terms of basic necessities.
  5. Offer information and support to service users and their families.
  6. Counsel clients and patients in individual and group sessions to help them overcome dependencies, recover from illness, and adjust to life.
  7. Receive and screen clients to ensure they are survivors of torture for any physical, mental, and psychological problems.
  8. Investigate survivors of torture or neglected cases and take authorized protective action when necessary.
  9. Advocate for clients or patients to resolve crises.
  10. Collaborate with other professionals to evaluate a patient’s medical or physical condition and assess client needs.
  11. Make follow-ups to review healing and coping progress and plan termination/discharge.
  12. Offer community support to target groups.
  13. Form groups, orient members to the purpose of the group, and review progress towards achieving goals.
  14. Participate in planning and budgeting for the Social Work department as per ACTV guidelines.
  15. Contribute to proposal writing and any other ACTV fundraising initiatives.
  16. Carry out provisional diagnosis/assessment of clients for any physical, mental, legal, and psychological problems and refer them appropriately.
  17. Prepare clients for voluntary counseling and testing.
  18. Prepare and produce periodic reports for the unit as per agreed timelines.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Manager.

Key Performance Indicators:

  • Psychological support to Torture Survivors.
  • Review and screen clients.
  • Assessment of clients.
  • Preparation for counseling for survivors of torture.
  • Preparation of reports.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and Social Administration, Social Sciences, Psychology, or any other relevant degree in Humanities.
  • At least three years of relevant work experience in an NGO.
  • Age: 25 – 35 years.

  • Knowledgeable about human behavior and social systems.
  • Analytical skills.
