The Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration (IDRC) is a non-profit research organization. IDRC conducts research in infectious diseases including Malaria, HIV and Tuberculosis. Our studies have led to over 300 publications and have impacted on the management of infectious diseases in Uganda. IDRC currently manages over 41 Grants with an annual budget of $11 million. IDRC was established in May 2008 by Ugandan health scientists from Makerere University College of Health Sciences, University of California, San Francisco and the Uganda Ministry of Health.
Job Summary:
The Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration (IDRC) seeks to hire a suitable candidate for the position of Laboratory Technician for the MUSICAL study to be based in Tororo. The Successful candidate will be reporting to the Laboratory Coordinator.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Isolate and cryopreserve PBMCs, plasma and RBC pellet.
- Calibrate and maintain all equipment, record and analyze results, report their findings to the supervisor and adhere to all laboratory procedures.
- Preparing the necessary reagents for the routine laboratory work and ensure proper inventory of all laboratory supplies.
- Making sure that internal quality control systems are followed and participate in the quality control and quality assurance programs;
- Participate in data entrance and maintenance of databases describing stored specimens;
- Maintenance of equipment, including keeping daily logs of equipment.
- Attend and participate in Tolab General monthly meetings.
- Participate in all training programs organized by the organization for purposes of quality improvement.
- Development of laboratory documents (logs, forms, SOPs), training logs and properly storing/ archiving these documents.
- Adhere to safety procedures while performing duties.
- Performance of Immunological assays including flow cytometry.
- Weekly Immunology meeting attendance and participation.
- Maintain immunology inventory and communicates supply needs to the supervisor for replenishments.
- Organize shipment of samples to collaboration laboratories
- Submission of weekly targets and quarterly achievements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or its equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology or Cell Biology is allowable
- Experience in immunology assays such as PBMC isolation and cryopreservation, whole blood assay, intracellular cytokine staining and analysis
- Good knowledge in Immunology techniques such as ELISAs, flowcytometry, stimulation assays among others.
- Good specimen database management skills
- Good Molecular techniques such as PCR
- Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
- Good computer skills in Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and Power point)
- At least 2 years’ experience working in a research setting especially malaria, HIV and TB
