Project & Job Profile:

IIRR is implementing a project on Integrated Natural Resources Management and Sustainable Land Management practices using Agro-Pastoral Field School and watershed management approaches in Karamoja between September 2020-February 2022. The project aims to increase production through climate-resilient production techniques, and also support efforts to diversify production to increase income and reduce vulnerability to food insecurity.

You will implement project activities and provide technical support to project implementation issues for the project, provide leadership to the APFS team, align with IIRR program quality principles and standards, donor guidelines, and IIRR’s best practices to advance the delivery of high-quality programming to the poor and vulnerable. Your knowledge and support will contribute to the effective, adaptive, and innovative implementation of the project.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Project Manager to plan, coordinate, implement, supervise, monitor, and evaluate all project activities in line with the approved project documents and signed cooperation agreement
  • Mobilize and train the APFS facilitators in project-related programs
  • Conduct watershed activities in the two districts
  • Coordinate and supervise all APFS facilitators to ensure efficient and effective delivery of the project
  • Prepare weekly, monthly biannually, and annually work plans and budgets in consultation with the Project Manager to ensure appropriate utilization of project resources
  • Prepare and submit quality and timely reports as required from time to time by Project Manager
  • Support in developing project M&E system and report on the progress and quality of completed and on-going project activities
  • Work closely with PM to visit beneficiaries in project sites to determine and verify project implementation against project standards and donor requirements
  • Support the organization efforts in resource mobilization and any other assignments
  • Represent IIRR in forums, workshops, meeting, and other related assignments
  • Document lessons learned, good practices, and success stories

Specific outputs:

  • Mobilize and raise awareness of Resource Users in selected Micro-watersheds in INRM/SLM, CSA, and FFS Approach
  • Conduct stakeholder identification in the watershed to participate in a community meeting and their interests and climate risk and vulnerability assessment to assess the exposure of farmers and their agricultural livelihood resources/ assets to climate hazards
  • Support the trained facilitators to establish 4 new field schools
  • Conduct Vulnerability Assessment (VA) of the watersheds (problems, opportunities, and measures
  • Train the WMA/groups in community-managed disaster risk reduction (mobilization, planning, implementation and monitoring, and evaluation
  • Re-mobilize and strengthen seven (7) existing APFS groups, select the Facilitators, organize a refresher Training them.
  • Facilitate the APFS to develop/review their group action plans (GAPs)
  • Prepare a comprehensive list of restoration measures to be promoted in the watershed by the communities and Identify, assess and map degraded crop cultivation areas in the watershed as per watershed plan developed
  • Train community members in the micro watershed on integrated natural resources management, Sustainable Land management
  • Facilitate quarterly APFS review meetings, end of season evaluation workshops, and bi-annual review meetings for watershed resource user committees
  • Carry out Comprehensive Participatory Integrated Watershed and Climate Risk assessments in selected Micro-watersheds
  • Support to develop Community Based Watershed Management plans and Monitoring and Evaluation systems for selected Micro-watersheds
  • Support establishment of validation studies among 63 APFS to identify viable adaptation options for improved crop and livestock productivity
  • Train community members in the micro watershed on integrated natural resources management, Sustainable Land management
  • Support communities to rehabilitate 450 hectares (1,125 acres of degraded cropland in selected micro-watershed areas
  • Support assisted natural regeneration to restore vegetation in 400 hectares (1000 acres) of degraded watershed areas
  • Undertake reforestation and rehabilitation of 200 hectares (500 acres) of degraded hotspots in a selected micro watershed.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, Agriculture, Development Studies or a related field
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience ideally with an international NGO
  • Knowledge of technical principles and concepts in integrated natural resources management (INRM), Sustainable Land Management practices, and watershed approach
  • Proficient in MS Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), GIS, Web Conferencing Applications and good report writing skills

Personal skills:

  • Understand, respect, and practice the organization’s shared vision, mission, and values, including mutual respect, equity, and justice; honesty, and transparency
  • Ability to communicate clearly and demonstration of good interpersonal skills with strong training skills, meeting & facilitation; coaching skills are essential for capacity building of project staff and beneficiaries
  • High-level integrity and initiative-taking and positive attitude towards learning and sharing.
  • Good computer knowledge in the area of MS word, MS Excel, Powerpoint & e-mail.
  • Working knowledge of budget management
  • Valid riding license and ability to ride a motorcycle
  • Ability to establish strong relationships with the local leaders, community, and government representatives will be vital
  • Strong analytical skills with focus on detail
  • Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions
  • Good technical writing skills
  • Presentation, facilitation, training, mentoring, and coaching skills
  • Proactive, resourceful and results-oriented.
