About INTEGRATED COMMUNITY HEALTH INITIATIVE ORGANIZATION (ICHIO)
ICHIO-UGANDA is a Non-Governmental Organization incepted in 2015 by Environmental Health Science students at Makerere University School of Public Health. This followed an observation of the prevailing health situation on islands, landing sites and other congregate settings, characterized by unsafe water, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, high prevalence of HIV/TB, high rates of drug/substance abuse, Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and other preventable diseases.
Our programs
Water Sanitation & Hygiene
In Uganda today the biggest percentage of morbidity is attributable to water, sanitation & Hygiene, this creates a big burden to the National Health System, and yet they can be prevented through integrated approaches tailored at a community level.
Tuberculosis & HIV Control
The current TB & HIV burden in urban and other developing areas in Uganda is worrying with Kampala city alone contributing over 20% of the national burden. The emergence of resistant forms of TB & HIV makes it even more complicated to manage. Therefore, we hope by applying community led TB/HIV finding and management models will greatly impact on early TB/HIV finding and management.
Drug & Substance Abuse Control
According to the Director Health Services Dr Anthony Mbonye (2013), Health Management Information System Surveillance report on alcohol and drug use indicates the highest consumption to be in the central region. As an indicator ICHIO employees a voluntary team in slum areas to help drug users access medical, and counselling services.
Neglected Tropical Diseases Control
The neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are the most common infections of the world’s poorest people living in developing countries. Uganda, which is listed among the developing countries, is highly endemic to NTDs which pose a heavy burden on poor rural communities. The inequitable distribution of human resources particularly affects NTD areas that are generally hard-to-reach and hard-to-stay for health workers. Through our program, we hope to reduce popular NTDs in urban and rural areas.
