Burt Systems is looking for young 20 – 35 year old online adventurers to join our savvy Web Design Team!
Duty Station
This job is advertised for our Entebbe office and is not a remote (online) job. Only applicants that live in and around Entebbe will be considered. If you live in Kampala or beyond Namulanda outside Entebbe, you’re discouraged from applying.
Roles and responsibilities
After establishing the target audience for a website and identifying the type of content it will host, the junior web designer/developer will:
- write the programming code, either from scratch or by adapting existing website software and graphics packages to meet business requirements
- test the website and identify any technical problems
- upload the site onto a server and register it with different search engines.
Working hours
Our web designers/developers usually work between 37 and 40 hours a week, 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Additional hours may be required to meet deadlines, which could include evenings and weekends but those can always be avoided by a savvy professional.
Salary and Benefits:
The junior web designer/developer’s salary will be based on initial skillset, negotiating power and comes with daily/weekly/monthly benefits and allowances.
It may be possible to work from home and flexible hours may be available.
You’ll be required to work in an open-plan office environment. A limited amount of travelling may be required.
Qualifications.
The applicants should:
- have skills in software programming (most importantly php, html, css) and graphics
- have creativity and imagination
- be adaptable and able to pick up new techniques
- have good interpersonal and communication skills
- keep up to date with advances in computer technology and how this affects the business environment
Burt Systems expects applicants to have a degree-level education, with relevant work experience and vocational skills. A range of qualifications that provide a good grounding in web design, interactive design, graphic design and internet technology is an added advantage.
Training will be done on the job, and includes in-house and external training courses. As the IT industry continues to develop it is vital for web designers/developers to keep up to date with new software and technology.
The normal progression route for the junior web designer/developer will be to become a senior or principal web designer/developer and maybe have his own team within the company.
What is the work be like?
The junior web designer/developer will responsible for the design, layout and coding of our clients’ websites. They will be involved with the technical and graphical aspects of the websites; how the sites work and how they look. They may also be involved with the maintenance and update of existing sites.
In order to design a website, the junior web designer/developer will:
- establish the purpose of the website based upon its target audience
- identify the type of content the site will host
- determine any functionality that the site must support, for example, whether it will handle financial transactions or enquiries
- give guidance on layout, colours and styles.
This will determine the type of technology to use and how complex the site will be. The web designer/developer will then:
- write the programming code, either from scratch or by adapting existing website software and graphics packages to meet business requirements
- test the website and identify any technical problems
- upload the site onto a server and register it with different search engines.
The junior web designer/developer will be required to work as part of a team, which will include a web author/editor and an account manager.
Skills and Personal Qualities

- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field is required.
- A design portfolio is a plus
- Knowledge of HTML, Javascript, WordPress, CSS and PHP
- Proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator), InDesign or other visual design programs
- Copywriting skills a plus
- 2+ years relevant design work experience is an added advantage
- A positive attitude, incredible creative ability and a relentless work ethic
