Job Summary
Data Collection Jobs Uganda: Columbia University, (Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health, Mailman School of Public Health), World Vision International in collaboration with The AfriChild Centre (AfriChild) for the Study of the African Child (Makerere University) and World Vision, Uganda are conducting research on Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) in Emergencies. The study is a Randomised Control Trial (RCT) of Child Friendly Space interventions for girls and boys affected by conflict and displacement.
This study will be implemented using mixed methods approach, concurrently collecting qualitative data and quantitative survey data to triangulate and corroborate findings. The study intends to recruit competent individuals to fill the position of CFS Enumerators who will conduct qualitative and/or quantitative data enumeration on a regular short term basis.
Qualitatively, the study will employ various methods including in-depth interviews with children’s parents and caregivers, semi-structured interviews with key informants, and focus group discussions with children, parents, caregivers and community leaders. We will explore existing child protection systems and the role of CFS in supporting or strengthening them, through the use of community based participatory approaches such as Participative Ranking Methodology (PRM), body mapping, web of support, spider diagrams and participatory community mapping of resources.
Quantitatively, baseline survey data will be collected in the period immediately prior to CFS implementation and then again during each of the specified measurement periods, surveying households in the target communities utilizing cluster randomized sampling. The data will be collected from primary caregivers of children aged 6-9 years, and from children aged 10-18 directly. Quantitative data collected will range from demographic data to mental health and
psychosocial wellness-related questions.
Major roles and responsibilities:
i. Conduct high quality interviews with primary caregivers and children 10 years and older using smart phones
ii. Support the World Vision Child Protection Assistants in mobilizing participants of the study
iii. Actively engage participants and community members in participatory activities (i.e. PRM, focus group discussions, etc.)
iv. Work with team to document lessons learned in line with the research.
v. Actively participate in all aspects of training and data collection exercises
vi. Consistently report data collection concerns and challenges to the DM&E Specialist and/or the Qualitative Research Manager as they arise
vii. Abide by ethical guidelines in the collection and storage of both qualitative and quantitative data
viii. Follow World Vision child safeguarding policies
ix. Perform other duties as assigned by the Core Research Team.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates should be able to read and write in English, as well as South Sudanese Arabic and/or Kakwa (at least at Intermediate High Level).
Has basic knowledge and belief in child protection issues and mental and psychosocial support
Has basic or concrete awareness of the socio-cultural context of the refugee community in Omugo Refugee Settlement
Is comfortable working with children, their caregivers, and CFS animators
Has good communication, interpersonal and facilitation skills
Is able to work as a member in a team, providing support to colleagues and maintaining strong reporting
Has general knowledge about smart phones and/or digitalized devices.
Preferably holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Social Science, Social Work, Community Development or Education
Any previous experience with interviewing or data collection is a major benefit
